What is the largest threshing show in the United States? ›

WMSTR, or the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion, is an annual, non-profit "steam meet" held in the small town of Rollag, Minnesota. It takes place over the weekend of the US Labor Day holiday (first Monday in September), and draws around 80,000 visitors during the four days of the event.

Our gates open at 6 am Friday-Monday of our show. Shuttle wagons start running at that time as well to transport you from the gates to locations around the showgrounds. Starting at 6:30, you can find breakfast being served at our church food stands. If you are planning to visit Rollag, plan on staying more than a day.

A rolag (Scottish Gaelic: roileag) is a roll of fibre generally used to spin woollen yarn. A rolag is created by first carding the fibre, using handcards, and then by gently rolling the fibre off the cards.

The giant difference between the two is how they're made. Traditionally, rolags are made on hand cards or blending boards and rolled off into a tube. Or they can come straight off a drum carder. Fauxlags are generally made from pre-made batts, carded roving, or top.

What is the Difference? Blending board rolags are made in a similar fashion but they are not as tightly rolled, dense, and compact as punis. Still fun to spin they are a little larger, fluffier and not quite as easy to hold while spinning, especially when using a spindle.

“Rolag” is derived from Gaelic languages and means something like “l*ttle roll.” Traditionally made on handcards, a classic rolag is made from wool opened and carded into a lofty, fluffy preparation.
