BIOS Versions

Recommendation: After a BIOS update load the default settings of the BIOS, and adjust the configuration as suggested below at BIOS Configuration.

  • Version 2.0b (BIOS Date 09/17/2012)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 03.12.2012.
  • Version 2.0a (BIOS Date 06/08/2012)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 22.06.2012
    • Support of the new E3-1200v2 (Ivy Bridge) CPUs.
    • To update the BIOS, follow the steps described in Updating the BIOS of a Supermicro X9SCM-F Motherboard.
  • Version 2.0 (BIOS Date 05/08/2012)
    • This version is not signed off for usage with our servers.
    • We found the following technical issues with this BIOS version:
      • Adaptec RAID Controllers get only detected in PCIe slot 4.
      • ME failure messages during BIOS update.
      • When the PXE boot option is enabled for both NICs, the server will not boot. Error message: "PCE-E05: The LAN adapter´s NVM configuration is corrupted or has not been initialized. The Boot Agent cannot continue". (Supermicro FAQ 14343)
    • "MEI: Init hw failure" with Ubuntu Version 12.04 fixed.
    • BIOS User password function corrected. (Supermicro FAQ 14328)

IMPORTANT: Motherboards with a BIOS version of 2.X must not be flashed with a 1.X BIOS version. After such a downgrade, the motherboard will not boot up again.

  • Version 1.1a (BIOS Date 09/28/2011)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 28.10.2011
    • With BIOS version 1.1 there are some issues regarding display of the correct system temperature (Supermicro FAQ 14236). FANs might not be controlled correctly (Supermicro FAQ 12759). BIOS 1.1a corrects these issue.
    • Beginning with this version, LSI HBAs (LSI 9211, 9200, 3081) can be used.
    • Issue Power Button Function = 4 Seconds Override with Restore on AC Power Loss = Last State solved (Supermicro FAQ 12810)
  • Version 1.1
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 10.10.2011
    • Beginning with this version, IPMI IP addresses do not need to be entered with 12 digits any more.
    • With this version there are some issues regarding display of the correct system temperature (Supermicro FAQ 14236). FANs might not be controlled correctly (Supermicro FAQ 12759). BIOS 1.1a corrects these issue.
  • Version 1.0c (BIOS Date 06/30/2011)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 13.07.11.
    • The IPMI gateway IP can now be configured within the BIOS.
    • To configure the IPMI successfully, all 12 digits of the IP must be entered. (eg. IP: 010.010.010.160, netmask: 255.255.255.000).
  • Version 1.0b
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 01.07.11.
    • The IPMI gateway IP cannot be configured within the BIOS. This must be done via other tools like IPMICFG or SMCIPMItool.
    • With this BIOS version it's possible to enter the BIOS after the first POST by pressing the 'Del' button of the keyboard.
    • To configure the IPMI successfully, all 12 digits of the IP must be entered. (eg. IP: 010.010.010.160, netmask: 255.255.255.000).
  • Version 1.0a
    • With this version there can be issues with the paritioning of hard drives during the installation of Windows 2008 or SBS 2011 on a onboard Intel/LSI controller. Use a newer BIOS to fix this issue.
    • With this BIOS version, the BIOS can be entered only after the second POST (after the initialization of all components) by pressing the 'Del' button of the keyboard.
    • To configure the IPMI successfully, all 12 digits of the IP must be entered. (eg. IP: 010.010.010.160, netmask: 255.255.255.000).

Note: dependent on the type of server, the list of sensors can be shorter as sensors for not available fans might be removed.

IPMI Versions

  • Version 3.15
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 29.11.2013.
    • When updating this firmware the hook should remove the preserved configuration - (Unckecking this option will restore the factory default setting of BMC), only to ensure that that all updates are applied and the sensors are properly displayed. The removal of the hook sets the IPMI modules back to factory defaults and the IP address and all settings must be reconfigured by ipmicfg means or another way, see IPMI Configuration for Supermicro Systems
    • NOTE: This IPMI version resolves security vulnerability issues. For more information, please see our Wiki article Supermicro IPMI Sicherheitsupdates November 2013.

NOTE: A 3.xx firmware version may not be reflashed to an underlying (2.xx / 1.xx) version. This can damage the IPMI modules.

  • Version 2.24 ( IPMI Firmware 2.24 Release Notes)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 19.04.2013.
  • Version 1.86
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 11.04.2013.
  • Version 1.67 (IPMI Firmware 1.67 Release Notes)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department on: 22.06.2012.
    • Additional IPMI sensor Peripheral Temp
    • When you update to this firmware, uncheck the check box Preserve Configuration - (Unckecking this option will restore the factory default setting of BMC) as otherwise wrong sensor values may be displayed in the web interface and the new IPMI sensor Peripheral Temp won't be shown. The IPMI configuration will be set back to factory defaults. The IPMI IP and all other configuration options must be entered again.
  • Version 1.45 (IPMI Firmware 1.45 Release Notes)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department: 15.03.2011.
    • IMPORTANT: Fixes IPMI security issues, see Security Problem #3 of Security Recommendations for Remote Maintenance Features for IPMI Chips with ATEN-Software
  • Version 1.30 (IPMI Firmware 1.30 Release Notes)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department: 27.10.2011.
    • IMPORTANT: Fixes IPMI security issues, see Security Problem #1 and #2 of Security Recommendations for Remote Maintenance Features for IPMI Chips with ATEN-Software
    • Corrects the Supermicro Manufacturer ID (is now 10876, was 47488 before, which is wrong). To query OEM sensors with FreeIPMI, you need FreeIPMI version 1.0.9 or higher.
  • Version 1.08 (IPMI Firmware 1.08 Release Notes)
    • Signed off for general usage by our QA department: 29.06.2011.

Software Tools
